Injection Molding RFQ Checklist for OEM Buyers
A complete RFQ does not need every answer on day one. It should make the known requirements visible, label the open decisions, and give the supplier enough context to ask focused questions.
Send these core files and requirements
- Current 3D CAD file such as STEP, IGES/IGS, or Parasolid where available
- 2D drawing or PDF with datums, critical dimensions, tolerances, and revision
- Plastic resin, grade, color, supplier preference, and any drying or handling note
- Annual volume, batch quantity, forecast, launch phase, and repeat-order expectation
- Surface finish, texture, appearance, color standard, fit, function, and assembly criteria
- Target timing, sample approval milestone, delivery destination, and packaging requirement
- Project scope: mold only, mold plus molded parts, prototype or bridge tooling, or existing mold transfer
Add the details that change the quote
Tooling
Cavity count, expected service life, runner approach, mold standard, steel preference, hot-runner requirement, spare parts, and maintenance access.
Part production
Machine fit, cycle or output target, process assumptions, inspection frequency, packaging, labeling, and shipment lot size.
Special processes
Insert molding, overmolding, secondary finishing, assembly, painting, marking, welding, or other downstream work.
Commercial
Ownership, NDA or confidential file handling, payment and shipping terms, taxes, sample acceptance, change costs, and responsibility boundaries.
Quality
Critical-to-function features, measurement method, appearance standard, control plan, validation, traceability, and customer reporting format.

Open questions are grouped by engineering, tooling, production, quality, commercial, and logistics responsibility.

The part, resin, quantity, tolerances, finish, and target schedule are connected to a practical manufacturing route.

Quote
The quotation states assumptions, scope, milestones, approval points, exclusions, and next actions.

Proceed
After approval, the current file revision and responsibilities are used to start DFM, tooling, molding, or transfer work.
