Secondary Operations and Assembly for Molded Parts
A molded part may need more work before it can ship or enter the customer’s assembly. Secondary operations should be scoped with the part, material, appearance, tolerances, quantity, and downstream function in view.
Operations to define
Deflash and trim
Remove gates, runners, flash, or support features while protecting cosmetic and functional edges.
Surface finishing
Review deburring, polishing, texture, coating, marking, or other agreed surface work and how it will be inspected.
Insert and fastener work
Define installation method, torque or retention requirement, alignment, damage prevention, and the evidence required.
Sub-assembly
Set the component list, sequence, fixtures, orientation, fit, function, and error-proofing requirements.
Pack and label
Protect appearance and interfaces, control part count, identify lots or versions, and match the customer’s shipping instructions.
Finish and assembly can change the mold decision
A gate, ejector mark, weld line, insert, texture, or draft choice may be acceptable before the downstream operation but fail after assembly. Review the full chain: molded geometry, secondary process, mating parts, operator or fixture access, inspection, packaging, and field use. This is why secondary operations belong in the initial RFQ rather than being added after the mold is released.
A simple operation matrix keeps scope clear
For each operation, identify the input part or component, the process, the critical feature, the tool or fixture, the inspection method, the quantity or sampling rule, the acceptance limit, the rework rule, and the packaging state. If an operation is coordinated outside the main facility, the quotation should identify that boundary and the evidence expected from the processor.

List components, versions, materials, orientation, interfaces, and customer acceptance criteria.

Confirm fixtures, work instructions, tooling, handling protection, and inspection equipment.

Build
Run the agreed sequence and control torque, force, position, adhesive, heat, or other relevant variable.

Check
Inspect critical dimensions, fit, function, appearance, missing parts, damage, and labels.

Pack
Separate, protect, count, label, and retain the information needed for repeat orders.
