Design questions before tooling

Insert position

Define datum references, loading direction, support, fixation, thermal movement, and protection from shift during injection.

Retention or bond

Decide whether the interface relies on mechanical lock, adhesion, chemical compatibility, texture, holes, ribs, or a combination.

Flash and appearance

Review shutoffs, parting lines, insert tolerance, cosmetic surfaces, witness marks, and the acceptable flash condition.

Material behavior

Compare shrinkage, temperature, moisture, hardness, flow, and chemical compatibility for the insert, substrate, and overmold.

Inspection

Define insert presence, position, exposed areas, bond or pull requirement, dimensions, fit, function, and appearance acceptance.

Characterize

Provide the insert or substrate drawing, material, finish, tolerance, geometry, and handling constraints.

Locate

Review datum scheme, cavity support, loading or automation, retention, and the effect of thermal movement.

Fill

Discuss gate, flow, venting, pressure, weld lines, flash, cooling, and risk to the embedded component.

Release

Confirm ejection, demolding, part protection, inspection, and downstream assembly or packaging.

Validate

Review first-off parts, dimensional and appearance evidence, retention or function, and repeatability before production approval.

The tolerance stack-up is the center of the decision

An insert, substrate, mold, and overmold each contribute variation. The review should identify the functional interface, the datum chain, the material movement, the fixture or loading repeatability, and the inspection method. A nominal CAD overlay alone cannot approve the finished assembly.

Special-process scope should be explicit

Specify whether the quotation covers insert supply, insert preparation, loading, overmolding, secondary operations, assembly, inspection, packaging, and repeat production. Confirm the material combination and required evidence for the actual part; do not assume bonding or compliance from the process name alone.
