Precision Injection Molding: Challenges and Requirements

Requirements to define first

  • Separate critical dimensions, geometric tolerances, functional fits, appearance, and non-critical features.
  • Define datums, measurement method, temperature, sample size, cavity identity, and acceptance criteria.
  • Choose a material with predictable shrinkage, moisture behavior, thermal stability, creep, and service performance.
  • Design the mold around steel accuracy, inserts, cooling balance, vents, ejection, wear, and correction access.
  • Establish a process window for filling, packing, mold temperature, cooling, and changeover.

Control variation, not only nominal size

Collect stable-run data across cavities, resin lots, shifts, and relevant environmental conditions. Use capability evidence where the customer requires it, and distinguish measurement variation from actual molding variation. Avoid promising a fixed tolerance without the part size, material, geometry, and process data.

Validation questions

Can the supplier show the datum strategy, shrinkage assumptions, steel inspection, trial history, gauge method, and correction plan? Precision is credible when each link in the chain has evidence.
