Selecting an injection mold manufacturer requires balancing engineering capability, quality evidence, capacity, delivery control, communication, IP protection, and total cost. A supplier that is cheap but cannot explain risk, records, or recovery actions may create a higher project cost.



Build a supplier scorecard
- Engineering: DFM, mold architecture, flow and cooling review, tolerance strategy, and design revision control.
- Toolmaking: steel, machining, EDM, polishing, texturing, fitting, mechanisms, cooling, vents, and maintenance access.
- Quality: measurement equipment, calibration, CTQs, sampling, traceability, trial reports, nonconformance, and change management.
- Capacity and delivery: machine range, workshop loading, critical suppliers, milestones, escalation, and recovery plan.
- Commercial and IP: ownership, data handover, confidentiality, warranty, payment stages, shipping, spare parts, and service.
Verify evidence
Ask for anonymized DFM, inspection, trial, and maintenance examples. Confirm the person responsible for technical communication and the method for approving changes. Check whether the quoted lead time includes design, machining, fitting, trial, correction, inspection, and shipment.
Compare total risk
Normalize quotes against the same CAD revision, resin, cavity count, surface finish, tolerance, samples, delivery point, and acceptance criteria. Location and a certificate list are inputs, not substitutes for technical evidence.
