Bioplastics in injection molding are a material-and-process decision that must account for rheology, moisture, mold design, durability, supply consistency, and end of life. “Bio-based,” “biodegradable,” and “compostable” describe different properties; none automatically guarantees lower impact in every application.

Clarify the material first
- Bio-based: the feedstock may be partly or fully derived from biomass, while the polymer may still be durable and non-compostable.
- Biodegradable or compostable: degradation depends on defined conditions, time, thickness, additives, and the available collection route.
- Recycled or filled: recycled content and natural fibers introduce their own moisture, variability, and performance controls.
Injection molding considerations
Confirm supplier data for drying, melt temperature, mold temperature, residence time, shear sensitivity, shrinkage, crystallization, and storage. Adapt gates, runners, vents, cooling, and ejection to the actual grade. Run a trial with the final geometry and measure dimensions, appearance, impact, sealing, heat, chemical, or fatigue performance as required.
Evaluate the whole lifecycle
Compare mass, service life, energy, scrap, recycled content, packaging, transport, and end-of-life route against a conventional resin baseline. Do not call a product sustainable only because its feedstock is biological. Document the claim boundary and the conditions needed for recovery or composting.
Buyer questions
Can the supplier provide stable lots, technical data, regulatory documents, and a validated process window? Does the target market have the infrastructure claimed in the product brief? Are the mold and part designs still robust if the resin supply changes?
