Sustainable injection molding is a lifecycle decision involving material selection, part durability, energy, scrap, recycled content, manufacturing, and end-of-life recovery. There is no universal “green” material or single process setting that proves sustainability; the right choice depends on the part’s function, service life, supply chain, and end-of-life route.

Start with material efficiency and durability
- Reduce unnecessary mass through sound DFM while protecting stiffness, impact, sealing, and service life.
- Choose resin and additives for the actual environment, including temperature, chemicals, UV, load, and required lifetime.
- Assess recycled content for contamination, color, moisture, mechanical performance, traceability, and specification approval.
- Design for disassembly, reuse, repair, or a credible recycling route when the product architecture allows it.
Reduce production waste and energy
Measure scrap by cause, not only by total weight. Improve first-pass yield through stable filling, cooling, ejection, and inspection. Review hot or cold runner decisions, regrind control, purge practice, machine utilization, mold temperature, cooling efficiency, compressed air, and packaging. The best intervention is the one supported by a baseline and verified after implementation.
Make claims responsibly
Separate measured facts from targets and assumptions. Document resin grade, recycled-content percentage, electricity boundary, scrap calculation, packaging, transport, and end-of-life scenario before making a public environmental claim. If a customer requests a life-cycle assessment or environmental data, use the agreed method and boundaries rather than publishing an isolated carbon number.
