Injection mold vents let trapped air and process gases escape as the cavity fills, reducing back pressure and helping prevent burns, short shots, and weld-line defects. This guide focuses on vent condition and troubleshooting: a vent that was correct at design release can become blocked, worn, damaged, or ineffective in production.



Signs that venting needs attention
- Burn marks or a darkened area at the last-fill location.
- Short shots, hesitation, or a cavity that fills only after pressure is increased.
- Weld-line strength or appearance that changes by cavity or resin lot.
- Flash at a vent land, trapped gas, unusual injection pressure, or inconsistent cycle behavior.
Map the symptom to the fill pattern and compare the affected cavity with a good cavity. Check whether the defect appeared after a tool clean, repair, texture, resin change, or process change.
Cleaning and inspection checklist
- Clean residue from vent grooves, parting surfaces, inserts, and the last-fill region using an approved method.
- Inspect vent depth, width, land condition, shutoffs, and adjacent steel for wear or damage.
- Check for blocked vent exits, crushed inserts, poor fit, or a seal that prevents gas from reaching the vent path.
- After service, run a controlled trial and confirm burn marks, short shots, pressure, dimensions, and appearance.
When to modify the tool
Do not simply deepen every vent: excessive venting can create flash or weaken a shutoff. The correction may be a cleaned vent, an added vent, a changed insert, a revised gate or flow path, or a process adjustment. Document the location, measured condition, change, and result so maintenance becomes repeatable.
