Injection mold operation and maintenance are linked: a clean, correctly installed tool makes process problems easier to diagnose, while poor handling can turn a small defect into wear, corrosion, or unplanned downtime. Use a checklist that covers both the molding cycle and the condition of the tool.

Before mounting and starting the mold
- Check the mold identification, revision, lifting points, cleanliness, and visible damage.
- Confirm platen, clamp, ejector, nozzle, and robot interfaces before applying force.
- Connect cooling circuits with the correct flow direction and check for leaks; record flow or temperature where the process requires it.
- Verify resin, color, drying requirements, mold temperature, and approved setup limits.
During production
Watch for flash, abnormal ejection force, sticking, burn marks, short shots, leaks, oil contamination, and unusual noise. Do not “solve” a mechanical problem by increasing clamp force or process pressure without identifying the cause. Keep cavity and core surfaces clean, make sure vents are not blocked, and lubricate only the specified components with a compatible product. Record changes to temperature, speed, pressure, cooling, and cycle time so a later defect can be traced.
After the run
- Remove resin residue and deposits from parting surfaces, cavities, cores, slides, and ejector areas.
- Inspect vents, shutoffs, guide components, seals, cooling fittings, and wear surfaces.
- Protect corrosion-sensitive surfaces according to the storage environment and close the mold in the approved position.
- Log shots, defects, repairs, spare parts, and the next preventive-maintenance date.
When a mold needs service
Escalate repeated flash, dimensional drift, difficult ejection, blocked cooling, corrosion, damaged shutoffs, or vent wear. A maintenance record should identify the symptom, evidence, corrective action, and post-service verification instead of only recording that the mold was cleaned.
