Injection mold tooling cost in China is a total-project decision involving DFM, steel, complexity, trials, corrections, ownership, shipping, and future maintenance. A low initial quotation can be useful, but only when the scope, assumptions, and acceptance evidence are comparable.

What drives the quotation?

  • Part size, geometry, draft, undercuts, slides, lifters, unscrewing, and cosmetic surfaces.
  • Cavity count, mold base, steel grade, inserts, standard components, gates, runners, cooling, and venting.
  • Machining, EDM, polishing, texture, fitting, assembly, trial shots, measurement, and correction allowance.
  • Engineering time for DFM, moldflow or filling review, design revisions, and documentation.
  • Freight, duties, packaging, spare parts, maintenance, and the commercial terms for tool ownership.

How to compare China tooling quotes

Normalize every quote to the same CAD revision, resin, annual volume, cavity count, surface standard, tolerance, trial quantity, and delivery point. Ask what is excluded: mold design changes, steel certificates, texture, inspection, samples, corrections, shipping, or spare parts. Confirm whether the tool can be moved, who retains the data, and what service is included after approval.

Control total cost through risk

Use DFM before final pricing to remove avoidable actions and corrections. Select steel by resin wear, corrosion, polish, texture, volume, and repair risk rather than by a generic “premium” label. Treat trial data and the correction loop as part of the investment. A tool that is slightly more expensive but easier to maintain and validate may reduce the total cost of production.
