Material Selection for High-Pressure Injection Molding

can fillers and additiv

High-pressure injection molding material selection must balance strength, flow, shrinkage, temperature, chemical exposure, reinforcement, drying, and processing risk with the part design. The best resin is the one that meets the service requirement in the actual geometry and process, not simply the one with the highest headline property.

Define the service requirement

  • Set mechanical load, impact, heat, chemical, UV, electrical, dimensional, appearance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Define flow length, wall thickness, gate location, cavity pressure, cycle, and machine limits before selecting a grade.
  • Compare virgin, reinforced, filled, recycled, and modified grades using the same test conditions and application boundaries.

Connect material to mold and process

  • Check shrinkage, orientation, warpage, moisture, thermal history, abrasion, corrosion, venting, and polishing requirements.
  • Confirm drying, melt and mold temperature, screw, pressure, speed, cooling, and residence-time guidance from the supplier.
  • Review whether reinforcement changes gate wear, fiber orientation, surface appearance, dimensional behavior, or inspection.

Validate and control substitutions

Trial the exact grade, color, lot, and mold. Measure dimensions, fit, appearance, strength, and service tests required by the product. Record the approved material and requalification trigger; an apparently equivalent resin can change filling, shrinkage, cycle, surface, and long-term performance.
