Processing acrylic PMMA successfully requires the right grade, dry material, suitable mold design, controlled filling and cooling, optical inspection, and careful handling. Clear acrylic makes small errors visible, so the process should be controlled from the resin bag through final packaging.

Process from design to part

  1. Define grade, color, flow, optical or mechanical requirements, surface zones, tolerances, and service environment.
  2. Complete DFM for walls, draft, gates, vents, polished surfaces, cooling, ejection, parting, and shrinkage.
  3. Dry and store the exact PMMA grade according to the material supplier’s guide.
  4. Establish controlled melt, mold, fill, pack, cooling, residence-time, and ejection conditions.
  5. Inspect dimensions, haze, color, transmission, stress, surface, weld lines, gate marks, and assembly.
  6. Protect the part from scratches, contamination, heat, and stress during handling and packaging.

Common causes of poor acrylic parts

Moisture can create splay or bubbles; excessive thermal history can damage appearance; poor venting or gate location can create weld lines and stress; uneven cooling can cause warp; and rough or contaminated steel can print into the optical surface.

Document the approved window

Record grade, drying, machine, mold temperature, fill and pack profile, cooling, inspection method, sample lighting, and change triggers. Requalify after a resin, color, mold, machine, or process change.
