Injection Molding Project Budget: From Mold Design to Production

what kind of profit margin can mo (1)

An injection molding project budget should connect part requirements, mold design, tooling, resin, machine time, validation, quality, logistics, and contingency. A reliable budget is a decision model, not one number copied from a supplier quote.

Build the budget in cost blocks

  1. Product and engineering: DFM, material selection, shrinkage, tolerances, flow or cooling analysis, mold design, revisions, and inspection planning.
  2. Tooling: mold base, cavities, steel, inserts, slides or lifters, gates, runners, cooling, vents, machining, EDM, polishing, texture, assembly, and spare parts.
  3. Production: resin, shot weight, cycle time, machine rate, labor, automation, setup, scrap, secondary operations, packaging, and storage.
  4. Validation: trial shots, dimensional reports, capability work, appearance approval, process documentation, and correction loops.
  5. Commercial risk: freight, duties, lead-time buffer, engineering changes, maintenance, rejected parts, and working capital.

Use scenarios instead of false precision

Model prototype, pilot, and full-production cases separately. Tooling is a fixed investment that is spread over volume, while material and machine time repeat with every part. Show assumptions for cavity count, annual volume, target cycle, resin, yield, and tool life. Run sensitivity checks for lower demand, a delayed launch, one cavity down, resin price changes, or a second trial.

Budget approval checklist

Require a quote tied to a drawing and CAD revision, an inclusion and exclusion list, sample criteria, ownership terms, maintenance assumptions, and change-order rules. A budget becomes useful when engineering, purchasing, quality, and operations can all identify which assumption they own.
